Area residents can still sign up to lay wreaths to honor veterans during the holiday season.

Wreath prep will take place at 10 a.m., Nov. 23 at the Killeen Special Events Center, 3601 S. W.S. Young Drive.

“The more people that come, the faster the prep will go,” said Jean Shine, owner of Shine Team Realtors in Harker Heights and the brainchild behind Wreaths for Vets. “Many hands make light work and we have more than 4,000 wreaths to fluff this year.”

Wreaths for Vets is a nonprofit organization that raises money to purchase silk wreaths and bows.

The annual Friends of the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery wreath laying ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 30.

Retired Lt. Gen. David Richard Palmer, author, historian and former superintendant of the U.S. Military Academy, will be the guest speaker. To combat parking problems, there will be a park-and-ride option available to wreath layers.

Shine said buses will run every 15 minutes from the parking lot at the Texas A&M University-Central Texas campus, 1001 Leadership Place in Killeen, to the cemetery at 11463 S. Highway 195.

“We are still raising money for the event, since the number of people expected to be interred at the cemetery is growing every year,” she said, adding that donations can be made online at wreathsforvets.org. or via checks payable to HUGSS/Wreaths that can be mailed to Wreaths for Vets C/O Shine Team Realtors, 100 W. Central Texas Expressway, Suite 302, Harker Heights, TX 76548.

“Every bit counts. People come from all walks of life and all ages, and from different parts of the state come to participate in our wreath laying. We are dedicated to doing this every year and donations help us make this possible,” Shine said.
