For Vicky Collins, Thanksgiving means giving to others.

Collins volunteered at the Jesus Hope and Love Mission on Thursday, helping serve free Thanksgiving meals to guests.

“I was excited to come and volunteer,” she said. “I feel if we have the opportunity to help someone else, then we should. It’s a blessing to give back.”

The Jesus Hope and Love Mission provided meals to around 500 guests — a feast that took nearly a month to plan, said Sue Stonebraker, kitchen manager.

“We start planning at the beginning of November because it takes quite a bit, a little bit at a time, to make this happen,” she said.

“This is important to do because Thanksgiving is a giving time.”

Stonebraker said the meal truly is a community event, serving people “from all walks of life.”

“It’s nice to share our blessings with others,” she said.

The mission has fed residents on Thanksgiving for four years.

Sarah Chae, an organizer, said the day is a way for the mission to “share our Christian love.”

“This is important because there are people in the community who need feeding,” she said. “Thanksgiving is a good time to share with them and to show them our love.”

The Salvation Army and Faith Point also partnered to serve Thanksgiving meals at Rivers of Living Waters Ministry.

They also delivered meals to households that weren’t able to attend the event.

True Deliverance Ministries International also served Killeen residents Thanksgiving lunch Thursday.

The ministry also delivered dinners to the Copperas Cove Police Department and local residents.
