Killeen-area residents can explore the depths of Stillhouse Hollow Lake at a dive site in Belton.

Angela Waggoner, manager of Scuba Divers Paradise, said the 1-year-old business offers basic and advanced scuba diving lessons, certification, boat tours and rentals of scuba gear, kayaks and canoes.

It is the only place locally that offers scuba diving. The next closest place is in Austin, she said.

"We have all the services you need for scuba diving," she said. "We have divers from all over the state that come and dive (at Stillhouse Hollow Lake)."

Waggoner said last year's drought affected her business due to low water levels at the lake's marina.

"We're full now, so hopefully, we won't have that problem this year," she said.

The region's two lakes offer a variety of outdoor summer activities for residents to enjoy.

At Belton Lake, families can soak in the sun at Water Fest from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday.

The event, which kicks off the summer season for the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area, features water slides, slip-n-slides, a kayak pool, paddle rides and other waterfront activities. Park activities, such as inflatables, horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking and camping are available for those who want to avoid the water. BLORA also offers golf, paintball, hunting and fishing, bingo, bowling, sprocket auto crafts, skating and aerobics.

Stillhouse Hollow Lake has three parks and Belton Lake has six, all of which offer family-friendly recreational activities.

Michael Mennor, director of outdoor recreation at the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area, said June and July are the busiest months of the year for waterfront activities.

Given the large crowds, he said, it is important for parents to supervise their children closely, especially toddlers.

"You'd be surprised how many parents ... turn their kids loose down there," he said, adding it's been a major issue in the past. "We really want to stress to parents that they need to monitor and keep up with their kids, especially being on the waterfront."
