Water line breaks in Copperas Cove

COPPERAS COVE - A break in a 12-inch water line closed a major thoroughfare and caused water to be shut off to several businesses Tuesday evening.

The break occurred about 4:45 p.m. just west of the Wolfe Road and Avenue D intersection, said Daniel Hawbecker, the water system superintendent for the city.

In order to fix the line, the city needed to close the westbound lanes of Avenue D from its intersection with U.S. Highway 190 to allow room for equipment to work.

Several businesses along the north side of the highway and along Avenue D also lost water during the repair, said Hawbecker. He estimated crews could repair the line within three to six hours.

City public works division head, Wesley Wright, said the break was probably caused by dry weather and the recent rain.

"When you get really dry everything is fine then, and when it rains, dirt tends to settle..." he said. He also noted the water line was probably between 20 to 30 years old, which could have contributed to the break.

The water line was located more than five feet underneath the outside westbound lane of Avenue D.
