Many residents in the Killeen-Fort Hood area woke up to freezing temperatures and ice-covered windshields Friday morning. While the area wasn’t hit hard by the ice storm that blanketed Dallas and other parts of the country, the widespread cold snap had an impact on air traffic and roads in Central Texas.

Weather conditions Thursday night and into Friday caused several cancellations and delays at the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport, according to city spokeswoman Hilary Shine.

The airport had five delays Thursday and no cancellations.

Shine said there were nine canceled flights and one delayed Friday. Seven of the canceled flights were arrivals; two were departures.

The city also closed the bridge on W.S. Young Drive, just north of Veterans Memorial Boulevard due to icy conditions.

Shine said the bridge is “very steep and very high.”

The Killeen Police Department received 28 calls about traffic accidents between 5 p.m. Thursday and 5 p.m. Friday. Of those calls, nine involved possible injuries. The Texas Department of Public Safety reported no major accidents in the Killeen area.

Harker Heights City Manager Steve Carpenter said city officials were keeping an eye on the weather and had Public Works crews on standby just in case.

“We had our sanders ready, and from experience, we knew which areas would need to be targeted if we had gotten hit,” he said, referring to hilly areas like Nola Ruth Boulevard and Verna Lee.

In Copperas Cove, “all city services have been operating routinely ... no issues reported,” said Kevin Keller, a public information officer with the city.

The Copperas Cove Police Department reported no major accidents or increase in incidents Friday.

Temperatures are expected to stay below or near freezing through the weekend and residents are urged to continue to use caution on roads.
