HARKER HEIGHTS — It's been a long time since Chris Greco, 10, has seen snow.

"The last time I had a snow day was when we lived in Virginia and we had like two feet of snow," he said.

Capitalizing on his day off from school, he dusted off his sled and took advantage of his driveway's steep slope, making several runs down the slick surface.

Chris wasn't the only person taking advantage of Mother Nature's wintery mix.

Mark Smith, and this three daughters took, advantage of a day off from both work and school.

"We are from all over and this is nothing," said Smith, a soldier serving on Fort Hood who also woke up to a snow day. "I'm enjoying this free day of leave with my family and look forward to a nice cup of hot chocolate when we get back to the house."

His three daughters, Natasha, 12, Rochelle, 10, and Rebecca, 5, braved the cold weather and joined their dad, pulling the youngest member of the family on a sled.

The Killeen Independent School District, which also includes public schools at Fort Hood, Harker Heights and Nolanville, canceled school  due to inclement weather.

Also closed for the day were Temple, Lampasas, Florence, Copperas Cove and Belton independent school districts. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas A&M-Central Texas and Central Texas College closed their campuses as well.

The Fort Hood Senior Commander authorized the closure of Fort Hood due to the current weather conditions.

Only mission essential were required to report for the duty, stated a news release from Fort Hood’s Public Affairs Office.
