Funeral services for Berneice Houston Garrett, 81, will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pershing Park Baptist Church in Killeen. Burial will follow at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.

She was born Oct. 29, 1931, to Frank and Annie Houston of Riverside.

Ms. Garrett joined Mt. Sinai Baptist Church of Trinity, Texas, at an early age. In 1972, she united with Pershing Park Baptist Church, Killeen, where she served the Lord in various capacities.

She graduated from Sam Houston High School in Huntsville. Her education includes a Bachelor of Science in home economics and graduate studies at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and the University of Central Texas.

Her teaching career spans 29 years including three years with Trinity Independent School District, one year as a substitute teacher in Europe, and 25 years in the Killeen Independent School District until her retirement in 1996. Since retirement, Ms. Garrett served several years as an active volunteer in Metroplex Health System.

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, Henderson; two daughters, Cheryl Garrett Bozman of Garland, and Carla Garrett Allen of Waxahachie; son-in-law, Donald Bozman, and grandson, Evan Houston Bozman, of Garland; son-in-law, Claiborne Allen Jr., grandson, Benjamin Garrett Allen, and granddaughter, Rachel Renee Allen, of Waxahachie; caring and supportive sisters, Barbara Houston Hobbs, Hommye Zell Houston Bonner and Evelyn Houston Davis of Waco; sister-in-law, Shirley; three brothers-in-law, Willie Hobbs, Arthur Bonner and David Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Building Fund, Pershing Park Baptist Church, P.O. Box 690496, Killeen, Texas 76549.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen.
