Catherine (Kate) Zayic, 101, died Sept. 12, 2013, at an assisted living center in Round Rock. Before her 30 years in Austin, she lived in Killeen and Fairview, Ill.

Born on June 29, 1912, in Mohawk, Mich., she was the second of three children of Italian immigrant parents Raffaelo and Luci Gaido. She married Jerome C. Zayic in 1934, later becoming a soldier’s wife when he joined the Army. They raised one daughter, Dr. Geraldine Lee Zayic Howard, of Coupland.

As an Army wife, mother and co-breadwinner, she was the epitome of a member of Tom Brokaw’s “Greatest Generation.” Seldom without a job from a young age in her father’s grocery store and tavern, she was still working well into her 70s.

Mrs. Zayic was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Enselmo (Sam) Gaido; and sister, Ernesta (Babe) Haeffner of Fairview, Ill.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Austin, which is in charge of arrangements. Offer condolences at
