Graveside services for retired Army Platoon Sgt. Daniel R. Wheat, 70, of Copperas Cove, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen with full military honors.

Mr. Wheat died May 29, 2014. He was born Oct. 9, 1943, in Peoria, Ill., to the late Charles V. and Ruth Reed Wheat.

He grew up in Peoria and went into the U.S. Army in 1960, serving in Vietnam as a combat medic. He retired in 1980 after 20 years of service.

He married Eva Kerley on April 27, 1963. They have resided in Copperas Cove since 1974. He was Catholic and active in the Knights of Columbus and life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Wheat was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Jerry and James Wheat.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Eva; sons, Danny Wheat and his wife, Shelly, of Copperas Cove, Billy Wheat and his wife, Tracy, of Willis and Michael Wheat and his wife, Jessica, of Austin; adopted son, James Wheat; eight grandchildren, Cody Wheat, Candi Williams, Steven Armstrong, Levi Wheat, Lacy Wheat, Alyssa Calkin, Sean Calkin and Logan Wheat; and two great-grandchildren, Luke and Kalynn.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Scott’s Funeral Home in Copperas Cove, which is in charge of arrangements.
