Funeral services for Joe Sherwood Hilliard, longtime resident of Odenton, Md., were held Wednesday. Interment was at the Maryland Veteran’s Cemetery in Crownsville, Md.
Mr. Hilliard died Sept. 13, 2013.
He was born Oct. 27, 1923, and raised on a farm near Killeen.
He graduated from Killeen High School, where he played football for three years.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942, where he served as an airline mechanic.
He flew 35 combat missions in the Korean War and was awarded the Air Force Combat Ribbon, the Air Medal, the Korean Service Medal and other lesser awards.
He attained the rank of lieutenant colonel.
With 10,000 hours of flying time, he visited 40 countries on four continents. He also worked as a real estate agent, air traffic control specialist, and a flight navigator on NASA missile calibration and simulation aircraft.
He enjoyed reading, bluegrass music, and fixing and repairing things.
Mr. Hilliard was preceded in death by his father and mother, Joe and Edith Hilliard; and brother, Kyle Hilliard.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hilliard; sister, Barbara Hilliard of Austin; three daughters and their husbands, Patty and Mike Landon of Colorado Springs, Colo., Carol and Joe Ambrozewicz of Bell Air, Md., and Linda and Glenn McCowan of Oakton, Va.; and 10 grandchildren.
