Graveside services for retired Command Sgt. Maj. Max B. Ogas will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen with full military honors.

Mr. Ogas died Oct. 14, 2013, in Temple. He was born June 25, 1930, to Max and Mary Barrous Ogas in Morenoi, Ariz.

He joined the U.S. Army at the age of 16. He was in combat in Korea and Vietnam. He was a soldier’s soldier-combat leader. He was stationed at Fort Hood, Fort Knox and Fort Polk. Duty stations also included Germany and Panama. He was 1st Brigade command sergeant major of the 6th Air Cavalry. His decorations and awards include the National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster; World War II Victory Medal; Silver Star Medal; Presidential Unit Commendation; Korean Service Medal with one silver service star and three bronze service stars; Valorous Unit Award; United Nations Service Medal; Bronze Star Medal with “V” device and two oak leaf clusters; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with palm; Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Commendation; Purple Heart Medal; Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters; Vietnam Service Medal with one silver service star; Good Conduct Medal, clasp, silver, two loops Air Medal with numerals 8 and “V” device; and Legion of Merit.

Mr. Ogas met his wife, C.J., at Fort Knox where she was going to Cooks and Bakers School while she was enlisted in the Air Force. They married in 1953. Mr. Ogas retired from the Army in 1976, at the rank of command sergeant major. He also worked at the Fort Hood Post Office and retired from there in 1993.

Mr. Ogas was preceded in death by two sons, Max and John Paul; and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, C.J.; his son, Joseph Scott Ogas of Copperas Cove; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Visitation is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove, which is in charge of arrangements. Offer condolences at www.crawfordbowers.org.
