A Mass of Christian burial for Donald Conkling, 78, of Copperas Cove, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Copperas Cove. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.

Mr. Conkling died Nov. 11, 2013, in Killeen. He was born Feb. 24, 1935, in Ovid, N.Y., to the late Lester and Dorothy Frankenfield Conkling.

He graduated from Ovid High School and joined the U.S. Army. He served his country for 22 years before retiring and working as a military contractor.

He married Rosa Helm Deck on July 23, 1986, in Las Vegas, Nev. He enjoyed serving his community in many capacities, including serving on the board for the Friends of the Library and Knights of Columbus serving as a Grand Knight. He also was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Copperas Cove.

He will be remembered for being a faithful husband and father.

Mr. Conkling was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rosemarie Garrison; and one sister.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa Conkling; children, Steven Conkling, Mike Conkling, Ray Conkling, Leslie Conkling, Violet Odom, Gladys Cummings, Mickey Deck and JoAnne Stewart; stepfather, John Filipeck; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A vigil service will be at 6 p.m. today followed by visitation until 7 p.m. at Scott’s Funeral Home in Copperas Cove, which is in charge of arrangements.
