Memorial services for Helga Lydia Smith, 70, will be at noon Wednesday at Killeen Memorial Park Chapel, 3516 Lake Road, Killeen.

Mrs. Smith died Nov. 11, 2013, in her home. She was born in Fraunhof, West Germany, to Emil and Lydia Westenfelder.

Mrs. Smith had an extraordinary love for animals.

She collected stray animals and gave them all a loving home.

Her love and interest for all animals provided her the opportunity to open her own pet store. Her “collecting” spilled over into the home: with stray teenagers who simply referred to her as Mom.

She opened her home and heart to all.

Mrs. Smith’s last request to her daughters and granddaughters was to keep the family together.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne B. Smith of Mars Hill, Maine.

Survivors include her two sisters, Lydia Prager of Haagen, West Germany, and Ingrid Philipp of Lauchheim, West Germany; two daughters, Beverly Merrick and Christina Guzman, both of Killeen; three grandchildren, Lydia Farina, Marina Ellis and Marissa Guzman, all of Killeen; and four great-grandchildren, Kirsten Alise, Michael Jr., Emily Rose and Johnny Wayne.

Killeen Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
