Funeral services for retired Col. Homer L. “Lee” Walker, 86, of Belton, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.

Mr. Walker died May 24, 2013. He was born May 4, 1927, in Marion, N.C., to Ira Lee Walker and Queenie Edna Bowman Walker.

He was a highly decorated infantryman and aviator, serving in post-World War II Japan, Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1975, after over 30 years of active duty.

After retirement, Mr. Walker obtained a law degree from St. Mary’s Law School in San Antonio and practiced law in Temple. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, State Bar Association of Texas, Austin Ski Club and the Over the Hill Gang of the Ski Club of Cooper Mountain.

He was married to Jennie Louise Smith Walker (deceased 2009) of Columbus, Ga. Louise was the mother of their five children and wonderful support during his Army years.

He married Elizabeth Kelly Walker of Belton. The family appreciates Elizabeth, who remained friends with Mr. Walker after their marriage and stepped forward to become his caretaker during his brief illness prior to his passing.

He had a lifelong passion for snow skiing. Every winter was dedicated to skiing and he traveled to many exotic locations to ski until purchasing a condo in Frisco, Colo., where he made many friends and spent many happy winters on the slopes of Summit County. When not in Colorado, he was at home at his lakefront residence in Belton.

He had many loyal friends and a loving family, all of whom will miss him and remember him for his integrity and generosity.

His military decorations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with numeral 3, Army Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (Japan), Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze service stars, Vietnamese Staff Service Medal 1st Class, Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal 1st Class, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with palm, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Senior Army Aviator Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Parachutist Badge and Ranger Tab.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by siblings, James Edward “Bill” Walker (Doris) of Charlotte, N.C., and Barbara Brandon (Richard) of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Survivors include sons, Michael Lee Walker of Austin, Mark Stephen Walker (Jan Ziegler) of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Homer Lee Walker II (Carla Walker) of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters, Rebecca Smith Walker Hilliard (Jerry Hilliard) of Belton and Jennie Louise Walker of New York, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jaylee Hilliard and Ryan Hilliard of Belton.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Dossman Funeral Home in Belton, which is in charge of arrangements.
