Graveside services for Dr. Howard Wayne Young, 95, will be at 2:15 p.m. Friday at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway in Dallas.
Mr. Young died Jan. 21, 2013, in Weatherford. He was born Aug. 23, 1917, in Brookesmith, to the late Thomas and Pearl Reno Young. A true outdoorsman, he loved all things outdoors, especially golfing, hunting and fishing.
On Oct. 9, 1942, he began active duty in the U.S. Army Air Corps and became a fighter pilot, flying 67 combat missions in Tunisia, Sicily, Rome and Arno.
Mr. Young was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Medal with three bronze stars, American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
After the war, he attended Southern School of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., and began his career as an optometrist. He moved to Killeen, where he practiced optometry for about 30 years, as well as being active in the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Young was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Young; his parents; brother; and three sisters.
Survivors include his sons, H. Scott Young and his wife, Viki, of Granbury, Greg Young and his wife, Sylvia, of Weatherford and Charles Warren Young of Austin; 11 grandchildren and their spouses; four great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Louann and Sonny; and a host of loving family and friends in Killeen and Oklahoma.
