Funeral services for retired Sgt. 1st Class Joe E. Skeens, 71, of Harker Heights, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home in Harker Heights. Burial will follow at Killeen City Cemetery with honor guards presiding.

Mr. Skeens died Oct. 12, 2012. He was born Nov. 24, 1940, in Gate City, Va., to Charlie and Estelle Skeens. He was married on June 3, 1967, to Margaret Skeens in Cairo, Ill.

He served two tours in Vietnam, 1965-1966 and 1970-1971, and was awarded both the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star.

After retirement, he was the service manager for AAMCO Transmission in Killeen for 15 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War No. 9192 in Killeen and a member of the Harker Heights United Methodist Church.

Mr. Skeens was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Donald W. Skeens and James M. Davis; a brother, Paul Skeens; and two sisters, Thelma Williams and Kathy Williams.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Skeens; his son, Joey Skeens of Delaware; daughters, Patricia Parks and her husband, Robert, of Nicholsville, Va., and Michelle Wells and her husband, Jeff, of Harker Heights; his son, Billy Skeens of Weber City, Va.; seven grandchildren; his sister, Shirley Davis and her husband, Fred, of Gate City, Va.; and his loving furry companions, Missy, Nazdaq and Scooter.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home in Harker Heights, which is in charge of the arrangements.
