Funeral services for retired Staff Sgt. John L. Schall, 73, of Nolanville, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen. Interment services will follow at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.

Mr. Schall died Aug. 11, 2013, in a Temple hospital. He was born Aug. 3, 1940, in West Palm Beach, Fla., to Hubert C. Schall and Mary (Wagner) Schall.

He served in the U.S. Army with honor until his retirement on May 31, 2002. While serving, he received a Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Aircraft Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, six Good Conduct Medals, Overseas Service Bar (6), Army Commendation Medal, Senior Aviator Badge, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with numeral 2, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral 3, Expert Rifle Badge and Aircraft Crewmember Badge.

Mr. Schall was very proud of his service to our country and enjoyed sharing the stories of his tours in Vietnam.

He retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and later worked for H-E-B in Killeen for a short time.

He also enjoyed gardening, yard work and most of all spending time with his grandchildren. He was a Master Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the American Rifle Association as well as the National Rifle Association.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Scott & White Hospital and Scott & White Hospice as well as the excellent doctors and nurses who helped John during his fight.

Mr. Schall was preceded in death by his parents and a stepson, Phil Rainbolt.

Survivors include his loving wife of eight years, Hulona Millsaps Schall; a daughter, Jo Ann L. Cantrell and her husband, Brent; his two brothers, Herbert Paul Schall and Ronald C. Schall; a sister, Inis Gilman; stepchildren, Tana Bunnell and her husband, Charles, Dick Rainbolt, Patricia Barth and her husband, Steve, Jim Millsaps, Sue Butler and Ricky Millsaps; grandchildren, Malea Hartley, Cody Hall and Collin, Amanda Cochrane and Brad Hobbs, Ty Butler and Kristin, Trevor Butler and Leeann; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
