Graveside services for Joseph “Joe” Norman Anthony French, 91, of Copperas Cove, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 State Hwy. 195 in Killeen. A gathering will be held after the service at Shilo Restaurant, 3701 W.S. Young Drive, Killeen.
Mr. French died Dec. 18, 2017, at the Hillview Manor Nursing Home in Goldthwaite. He was born Oct. 11, 1926, in New Rochelle, N.Y., to Joseph Harry and Ethel Matilda (Secord) French.
Mr. French was the last surviving of his three siblings. He served in both World War II in the Navy and in the Korean War in the Army. He worked as an auto mechanic.
Since his youth he had a love for motorcycles as he always had one throughout his life. His love for aviation drove him to purchase a 1943 Piper Cub J5 and spent the entire winter restoring it to its original glory. As his final retirement place, he moved to Texas and met some seasoned aviators who still enjoyed flying. Some of his last joys were flying when one of them called and asked him to go.
Mr. French was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Myla, in 2012.
He is survived by five of his six children: Marlene, Stephen, Theodor, Jo and David. His legacy continues as he has eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A very special thanks to Brenda Krause, who has become a dear member of the family and someone Mr. French had depended on for so many years. The family has come to trust, respect and depend on her expertise and loving care for Mr. French. We are very grateful for her supporting and loving friendship during this time.
Arrangements are under the care of Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove.
