Services for Miriam E. Thom, 88, will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Harper-Talasek Chapel. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Mrs. Thom died Aug. 26, 2014, in Belton after a short illness. She was born Nov. 3, 1925, in San Jose, Calif., the ninth of 11 children to Ottie F. and Laura Bryon Hurst — and she was the last surviving child. Having grown up in the Depression era in San Diego, she graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1943, where she served in the drum corps and the school choir.
In 1947, she married a World War II veteran, Homer C. Thom, in San Diego. Mr. Thom re-enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly thereafter to pursue a military career.
As a military spouse, Mrs. Thom raised five children as her husband rose to the rank of sergeant major and was transferred to four overseas assignments in Guam and Korea, one of which was a combat tour during the Korean War.
During the course of their 54-year marriage, the family moved to four states, spanning the breadth of our nation (California, Texas, South Carolina and Massachusetts), before finally settling in El Paso in 1967.
Her never-ending love for music drove her to pursue higher education at El Paso Community College, where she earned an associate’s degree in music in 1990 at the age of 64.
She used her magnificent contralto-range voice in Christian ministry in various churches as she moved around the country.
She relocated to Killeen in 2007.
Mrs. Thom was preceded in death by her husband, Homer C. Thom, in 2001 in El Paso.
Survivors include five children, Jeanne Thom Obee and her husband, F. Larry Obee, of Rockford Ill., Brian L. Thom and his wife, Sharon Knapp Thom, of Harker Heights, Janice Thom Carr and her husband, Conant C. Carr, of Las Cruces, N.M., Jonathan D. Thom and his wife, Bonnie Thom, of Troutdale, Ore., and Ruth Miriam Thom and her husband, Russell Wainwright, of Portland, Maine; 22 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Thursday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen, which is in charge of arrangements.
