A service for Walter Leroy Wedel will be at 11 a.m. at W.S. Young Church of Christ with Dan Carter and Boyce Edwards officiating. Burial will be at the Killeen City Cemetery.

Mr. Wedel died Feb. 28, 2014. He was born April 18, 1926, to Alfred J. and Alma Glaser Wedel in Stringtown near Rogers.

He graduated from Rogers High School in 1943.

In 1944, he married Eloise Hughes. She died in 1974.

On Sept. 3, 1976, Walter (Leroy) married Mildred Peters in Temple. Walter was a longtime member of the W.S. Young Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon for 45 years.

From 1950 to 1968, he maintained the telephone and alarm system at West Fort Hood. Then, from 1969 to 1982, he was wire chief and general foreman over the telephone and cable TV sections consisting of North Fort Hood, West Fort Hood and the main post. He retired in 1982 with 36 years of service.

From 1983 to 1997, he sold real estate for Holiday Homes in Killeen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Galen Wedel, who died Oct. 3, 2006.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred; his son, Stan and his wife, Ann of Austin; daughter-in-law Dianne Wedel of Belton; stepson Clifton Peters and his wife, Charla, of Belton; and stepdaughter Susan Peters and her husband, Bill, of Fort Worth; a sister, Bea McCauley of Catonsville, Md. He also has three grandchildren, Stacie Edwards and her husband, Jimmy, of Killeen, Aaron Peters of Belton and Ansley Allen and her husband, Scott, of Belton; and four great-grandchildren, Madison, A.J., Ryker and Keona.

A big thank you to the doctors, nurses and aides on STC 2 at Scott & White Hospital. We will be eternally grateful to the nurses and aides at Weston Inn for their love, respect and care given to Leroy and for the care and friendship they gave to the family.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the W.S. Young Church of Christ.

Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen is in charge of arrangements.
