(StatePoint) Homes and buildings account for 42 percent of U.S. carbon emissions, according to the Building Envelope Research Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Unfortunately, a lot of that energy goes wasted, seeping out through gaps and cracks, plumbing penetrations, ducts, doors, walls, floors and windows.

But much of that waste is preventable. In fact, 25 to 40 percent of energy loss in most residential structures is caused by random air infiltration through gaps and cracks, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. With simple air-sealing and insulation improvements, homeowners can affordably help stop energy waste, increase home comfort, and provide up to a triple-digit return on investment. Additionally, sealing gaps and cracks also reduces mold, mildew and musty odors, and keeps out dust, allergens and pests.

When undertaking a project to seal your house, look for an integrated system that works together to protect your home. For example, Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealants is easy to apply in one afternoon and sets in a few hours.

Stop letting money slip through your home’s cracks.
