Nolanville’s looking for a few good men — or women.

With only one day left in the candidate filing period, one current council member has filed for the vacant mayor’s seat and no has one turned in paperwork for the three city council seats up for election in November.

The lack of political activity is more than a bit troubling, especially since Nolanville’s city manager of more than three years left in July to take another job.

If none of the other incumbents file for re-election to their seats by Monday’s 5 p.m. deadline, only one current councilman — whose term isn’t up until 2015 — will remain on the dais.

For the past 2½ years, the turnover rate among elected officials has been dizzying.

In September 2011, former Councilman Miguel Aviles resigned amid a sexual assault investigation. In October 2012, Charlie Stewart forfeited his mayor’s seat while jailed on child sexual assault charges. Both are now in prison.

The council re-established stability after those stunning developments, but that crumbled this summer, as Mayor Pro Tem Sherri Morales resigned July 10, and Councilwoman Sherese Karlsson quit just four days later.

The remaining council members appointed Marlene Fey to fill Morales’ seat, and David Escobar was named to fill Karlsson’s spot. But Mayor Chistina Rosenthal is stepping down, and except for mayoral candidate Dennis Biggs, none of the incumbents have filed for election.

Whether the council could fill the seats by appointment is questionable. No seats are technically open until after the Nov. 4 election. After that point, three incumbents’ terms would be over; whether they would retain appointment power would be open to legal interpretation.

Hopefully, some civic-minded Nolanville residents will make the commitment to serve. Otherwise, the city may find itself in a troublesome spot.
