To the Editor:

The Constitution guarantees three inalienable rights: life, liberty, and a pursuit of happiness.

Guaranteed by liberty, freedom of speech grants the right of people to speak according to their consciences whether it is about the government or otherwise.

By targeting conservative groups during two consecutive election cycles (2010, 2012), the IRS has violated the inalienable right of free speech guaranteed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

This is unacceptable.

Some have said that this attack on free speech is but a matter of “government stupidity.”

They are correct; however, the American people deserved accountability, not excuses.

Recently, Lois Lerner implied admission of guilt, through pleading the Fifth Amendment, for her role as a leader in the IRS scandal, which was a high-handed attack on free speech.

This attack on free speech is an assault on the rights, which people in this country have fought to possess for 238 years.

As George Washington said, “If freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”

May we heed the wisdom of this Founding Father.
