To the Editor:

Unquestionably, there are thousands of Americans who oppose the death penalty. I’m not one of them. The reason?

The many times that victims are ignored and the rights of the perpetrators are enhanced. Starting with their childhood experiences, educational and financial background, etc., etc.

Recently, a prisoner on death row, scheduled to die by injection, died of a heart attack a few minutes after the injection procedure was mishandled. His lawyer stated that it was extremely difficult to watch him “clenching his teeth and writhing in the gurney.” I wonder if his attorney could have watched his client shoot a young girl with a sawed-off shotgun and then bury her alive? In my opinion, death by injection is an easy way for crimes such as these. He should have been buried alive. Another inmate on death row and scheduled to die the same day received a 14-day reprieve. His crime? Raping and killing an 11-month-old baby girl!

Some in the media, commenting on the failed injection case, considered it tantamount to torture and therefore against the Constitution. That’s utterly ridiculous. One has to wonder what would be those individuals’ reaction if the victim was their son or daughter?
