To the Editor:

Re: July 31 article, “Panel presents finding to KISD”

Accolades to Dr. Robert Muller, superintendent of Killeen Independent School District, for having the vision to create a panel of community members to study the disproportionately large number of African-American male students referred to the district’s disciplinary alternative education program (DEAP).

As one of the community members asked to serve on this panel, I know firsthand how complex this can be.

I also am very hopeful that the district will accept those recommendations from its staff and my panel of colleagues.

It is a good day in Killeen when community members can partner with KISD staff and leaders like Dr. Muller to address issues which will make all our students more successful.

I am both energized and optimistic about continued KISD-community partnerships such as these.

Horace Grace

Former DEAP panel member
