To the Editor:

During the health insurance fiasco for KISD employees, I’ve read comments from the four Killeen Independent School District board members who voted for the privately offered Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan and not the state TRS version of Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

These comments justified their decision to vote for a health care plan that will cost school employees hundreds of dollars per month more than the exact same plan offered from another vendor.

One of the comments was “this only affects a few employees and it doesn’t matter to them anyway.”

Well, it affects me. This teacher writing this letter today is one of many employees who get their health insurance from KISD and have no other option. It will personally cost me about $350 a month more. I take home after taxes about $3,400, so the difference between the two identical insurance plans more than 10 percent of my take-home income.

I know that to some of you that’s peanuts, but to me that’s a huge amount of my monthly budget. You have effectively lowered my pay by 10 percent simply for no good reason.

I can’t think of a single good reason that has come to light to make the decision to take money from my pocket and give it to a local private insurance broker to overpay for a plan that doesn’t offer a single thing more than the cheaper TRS plan.

Every argument offered by the board members who voted for the expensive BCBS plan has been weak.

One argument was that the TRS plan isn’t used by all school districts. That’s true. Ninety percent of all Texas school districts and entities use the TRS plan. We’re in the 10 percent that don’t. You have to wonder why we don’t, since KISD isn’t that much richer or smarter or a better shopper than 90 percent of other Texas districts. Who does the more expensive plan benefit? Not KISD employees.

To the KISD board members I want to remind you your legacy won’t come with your name on parks and plaques; your legacy will be set by how you have worked and served your fellow man. It won’t come in how much you made but in how much you give back.

Your grandchildren won’t remember what you did in back rooms amongst your business associates. They’ll remember you for the good you did.

When you make decisions that benefit an insurance broker at a heavy cost to 2,500 employees, that’s an ethical choice that won’t be forgotten.

To the board members and to Dr. Muller and the HR employees of KISD who have tried heroically to get the best health insurance outcome for KISD employees, thank you. You will be remembered.

The sad part about getting the vote is that unfortunately a lot of the teachers that complain about this district can't vote in this district because they live in other towns such as salado, belton temple and cove. So we that live here have to depend on the people of killeen to help vote the evil board out. in a town of close to 200,000 people only about 5,000 people vote. I disagree with ms. taylor on this though. our superintendent and the people in HR are just as corrupt as the money peeps on the board.

Desire to prevent money from going to a union operated health system? What? A more costly plan with similar coverages offered by local insurance broker seemed desirable in comparison? Of 1246 districts there are 1127 that use "union" plan. Those districts must be crazy!

The desire to prevent any money going to a Union operated health system that works was the motivation for choosing the other plan.

I can't believe everyone misses this little fact.

In the original article it made a point of stating that it was the Union Health Plan.

you allowed a person booted off the city council to slide onto this board. These are your results.

Proud Mother of an Army Avi8er

I hope everyone votes at the next election....Not only locally, but nation wide.

I remember years ago, my Civics teacher, Mr. Billinger telling the class...
"If your don't vote, don't complain."

The asylum has been running this country for to long.

Make a difference and VOTE!

We VOTEd them in and we can VOTE them out...YES WE CAN!

KISD is corrupt. They wont put black kids in special ED because the higher number of black kids in special ed = less federal dollars so the kids suffer and fail. They lump special ed kids in with average kids because its good for the speds, the lump the advanced kids with the average kids because its good for the average kids the result is slow kids not getting attention, smarter kids getting bored and stagnating and extra paper work for the teachers to fill out instead of teaching.

the worst thing is the teachers are forced to teach to pass a test instead of teaching to educate

Muller is bureaucratic moron and no doubt a dem0crat.

Well said ma'am! Those of you that have been in Killeen a while should know the board & city tends to do business that benefits friends. More people should come out & vote for candidates that care about the working citizens. Change can happen with the right people not the same old people that keep getting votes for no good reason.

Dr Strangelove

Why wasn’t the citizens of Killeen allowed to vote for this? KISD you work for us—WE PAY YOU. The citizens should be allowed to vote [ITS OUR MONEY] for this not just the PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF KISD!

@ To the board members and to Dr. Muller and the HR employees of KISD who have tried heroically to get the best health insurance outcome for KISD employees, thank you. You will be remembered.

I'm hoping the citizens, come School Board Elections. Will also remember, the ones who were more then likely responsible for the wheeling and dealing that must have went on which ended in the school board's decision. To go with the worse deal more so then the best deal for the employees ins. And which the paying members of the school district Begged to have happen.

Doesn't make good sense ,Does it? To make someone spend more money (when many wouldn't have it) when they could get just as good a deal for less money, from going in another direction. But when moneys involved, Sometimes people can decide to do many things if its for personal gain or personal friendship.

What's happened here, is 4 people on the school board (although some may try to squirm out of it with excuses) made a decision similar to the one another hand full made when the RECALLED Killeen city council decided to give a city manager 3/4 of a million dollars to get him off their backs with his allegations against them (one being walking forums).
That decision too was done for personal gain. But cost the tax payers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
When public elected figures are no longer capable of making good or seemingly honest judgments involving the peoples or tax payers money, They need never to hold public office again.
