To the Editor:

On behalf of the Killeen Branch NAACP, we will continue to advocate for a Killeen ISD campus to be named in honor of Alice Douse, the first black female principal in KISD.

Last year, supporters in and around our community signed a petition with over 1,500 signatures and presented it to the school board at the December meeting.

Though not mentioned in the Herald article after the announcement of naming the 33rd elementary school as Fowler Elementary, Mrs. Douse’s name was in that pool. We, the NAACP, Pastor (Dr.) William Campbell, Rosa Hereford, one of her former students, and her daughters addressed the board.

We are in support of the 33rd school being named Fowler Elementary and are accepting of the board’s decision. However, we are still in support and will continue to address the board of trustees to name the 34th elementary school after Mrs. Douse.

To date, there is still no campus (excluding Jackson Professional Learning Center) named after an African-American/black in the school district.

We will continue to stand firm on this and remain hopeful that this request becomes a reality.

Our African-American/black students should see this come to fruition, as well as Mrs. Douse, who gave unselfishly of her time and talent for over 33 years to plant seeds of prosperity. She is a passionate educator, community activist/supporter and a longtime resident of this community.

She taught so that we could be lifelong learners.

It’s time, Killeen, to move forward in the spirit of love and unity.
