To the Editor:

Granted, the general state of affairs in our country and the world is terrible. We truly live in a dangerous world. ISIS, Russia, Iran, North Korea and “home grown” terrorism are a serious threat and a clear and present danger.

Race relations haven’t been this bad in recent memory. Political divisions are so bad and hateful that they teeter on violent explosion.

Our police are under attack from the very people they risk their lives to protect. Christians can’t pray in schools or before sports events but taxpayer-funded Muslim prayer rooms are opening up in public schools.

Parents who object to young men who claim to be feeling their “feminine side” and who want to shower with their daughters and dress and undress in girls locker rooms are viewed as insensitive, prejudicial, and hateful bigots instead of moral people who are concerned about the safety of their children.

Anyone who believes in traditional marriage and biblical teachings on sodomy are labeled as hateful homophobes. Anyone who voted against Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, or voted for Donald Trump are dubbed “racists,” even if they are themselves black.

Good manners, mutual respect, and even respect for the elderly, common decency and generations of acceptable societal social norms and morality have practically been confined to the annals of history.

Divorce is routine and marriage is becoming rare. Sexual promiscuity and obscene, filthy and repugnant sexual experimentation have become normal and commonplace. It is morality itself that has become abnormal.

Out-of--wedlock pregnancies are now commonplace and abundant. Fathers who abandon their children and the mothers of their children are legion, especially in the African-American community. Having taxpayers pay to raise their children is now routine and viewed as an entitlement.

Cities, university campuses, some churches, entire counties and now even a few states routinely violate federal law by declaring “sanctuary cities” for “illegals,” to include even hardened and violent “criminal illegal aliens” without consequence. It’s become so bad that often illegal aliens who are in violation of federal law by even being here have access to valuable and expensive welfare and social benefits that the taxpayers who pay for them can’t themselves access.

It seems that just about everybody hates anyone and everyone who doesn’t agree with them. It goes on and on, but it’s important to remember that none of this started since January when Donald Trump became president. All of it flourished in the last eight years under the administration of Barack Obama. That’s the simple truth, and that’s a something that deserves to be “carved in stone” in the annals of history.

That's right this country was great before Obama was president. He created all the problems. You people who utter this nonsense are truly sad excuses for human beings. The man is no longer president. You have your rich daddy in office now, so you should be overjoyed. By the way, race is a social construct. The only thing black about him was his wife. You so called conservatives have all the control now and this country is still in a downward spiral. Get a grip.

DawgDave

Downward spiral? Employment is up, the deficit is shrinking. You libs keep dreaming. Oh, and the DNC's recent fund raiser managed to get the least amount of donations in 8 years. LOL

What!?! After 8 years of being called racist simply for disagreeing with Obama's policies you're going to tell us that he's not even black?!?

Wilyoldvet: The reasons for the draw down in Iraq have been well documented, and there has been no proof of WMD there. FYI - I don't have cable, and watch ABC only for local weather. Since Kuwait had no significant military, they bore most of the cost for that "war"- definition of mercenary. Most of the misinformed and/or uninformed critics I have encountered are devotees of Fox, Limbaugh, and the earlier Glen Beck - who some say has now seen the error of his ways.

tomintexas

Sorry Wilyoldvet - I don't receive cable news as you assume. I only watch ABC for local weather. I don't listen to talk radio like "chubby 'ol Rush". My neighbor has donkeys, so if I want to hear a braying jackass, I simply step outside. Even many republicans no longer try to defend the Bushs' role in the failed Middle East situation. Kuwait had no significant military, so they paid for much of Desert Storm. The U.S. really had no "dog" in that fight, but its involvement did much to generate hatred in Osama - all the rest fell in line.

Dawgdave: If you consider these observations "liberal hogwash", please point out with validated support any statement in my comment that is untrue or unsubstantiated. It is one thing to carry on an intelligent, fact-based discourse and another to make biased and emotional accusations. FYI: One should never assume that one is a "liberal" or "conservative" without knowing them. Some better informed consider me one of the most conservative people they know and some have accused me as being instrumental in electing Bell County's first statewide republican since reconstruction. However, I do believe that intelligent folks assess situations based on fact - not unbased ranting, and I refuse to sacrifice my intellect for a political situation - especially and extreme one.

DawgDave

I believe the others have done a sufficient job of that.

"Bush 41 set the stage with an offhand comment to Sadaam Hussein and subsequent invasion of Kuwait with a mercenary force. Then Bush 43 destabilized the Middle East with an ill-advised and poorly orchestrated invasion of Iraq."
Really?? You left out (or your "hypnotist" CNN) that WMDs were found and that our men and women in uniform were NOT mercenaries. OIF was a well executed operation that the Obama administration ruined when he "withdrew" (or cut and ran) forces from Iraq. The Obama administration was responsible for giving rise to ISIS courtesy of his support of the Arab spring.
CNN, MSNBC, and ABC has diluted your mind and gave you false information through liberalism.

Mr. Coet, thanks for your very eloquent letter. The liberal left led by Obama did more to bring down our country than most realize.
The one thing that I had high hopes for was Obama bringing the races together. He effectively made race relations worse than any time that I can remember. That was just one disappointment among many from Obama.

Couldn't agree with these observations more. Obama was a huge mistake whose damage will take years to undo

We do live in a dangerous world. Bush 41 set the stage with an offhand comment to Sadaam Hussein and subsequent invasion of Kuwait with a mercenary force. Then Bush 43 destabilized the Middle East with an ill-advised and poorly orchestrated invasion of Iraq. Additionally, his SEC's lax control of banks and Wall Street devastated the world's economies. Nixon's criminal acts produced political division and an insatiable desire for retaliation. Even Goldwater rightly predicted the adverse consequences of religious individuals' and entities' influence in politics. Invariably, theocratic involvement in government always damages and often destroys cultures.

"Unconventional" sexual activities and gender identification have existed since time immemorial - including in Ancient Greece. As evidenced by the submitter, these are often confused with pedophilia - the most flagrant "modern" examples of which have been evidenced in same sex abuses by clergy that well predated Obama.

Bible text is rife with marital and extra-marital situations that do not conform with so-called "traditional" standards. Marriage is a civil - not a religious - state. To validate: Just get a divorce. However, Obama and Clinton marriages have survived - unlike Reagan and Trump. Racism is well down the scale for complaints against Trump's statements and policies. Poor race relations have been exacerbated by visual exhibits of excessive police force and violence. Such examples always generate retaliation - even against the innocent. These will continue until governmental agencies abandon their "siege mentality" and punish their own.

Deterioration of social norms and decency predate Obama. Today's demise has been generational due to poor parenting in at least three cycles - with big bumps during the Viet Nam era...and then there were the "Roaring Twenties" and the "Gay Nineties" of the 1800s. Today's unwed pregnancies have been accelerated due to efforts against sex education, birth control and abortion.

The concept of sanctuary cities goes back thousands of years -it did not start with Obama. It has been associated with most religions, including Christianity and even to the Old Testament. In 1985 (Reagan/Bush era) San Francisco passed an ordinance forbidding police or magistrates to assist federal immigration officers. Other cities followed suit - as did churches. In the mid 1800s, sanctuary cities served the U.S.' first significant class of refugees - fugitive slaves.

Thus, there is no evidence that any of these situations began or "flourished" under Obama. They have been a part of the U.S. for decades and in some cases centuries, and their impact will not be alleviated until the citizenry becomes historically literate and factually and politically informed.
