To the Editor:
Even though the Texas Republican Party has seemingly learned its lesson, at one time its platform stated: “We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), critical thinking skills and similar programs,” etc.
Statements like that one cause the hearts of scammers, crooks, schemers, charlatans, cheats and all who want to delude people to leap with joy.
Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to do or what to believe and includes the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinking.
Thinking critically enables a person to understand the logical connections between ideas, solve problems systematically, identify, construct and evaluate arguments and be able to justify beliefs and values.
The world is changing fast and information technology requires continuous learning and creativity. It requires that one search for ideas and facts and then carefully reflect and evaluate and analyze logically.
To think critically is to justify and support your values and decisions. As humans we all have biases and preconceived notions from our upbringing and our previous observations.
It is very easy to fall back on our long-held ideology and deny facts and ideas that don’t support those biases and preconceived notions.
However, we should look at a particular situation, search for evidence, evaluate and reflect upon our thoughts, and then interpret and look for the most logical and reasonable conclusions.
Since Texas ranks 43rd nationally in education, we should all be critically thinking about this.
Remember:Democracy dies in darkness.
