To the Editor:
On Jan. 2, a friend and I met at the Fort Hood Clear Creek PX. I am not a dependent or a retired ID card holder, but my car is registered on Fort Hood.
Upon showing my driver’s license, the young soldier asked me if I had any paperwork to show. I pointed to the sticker on my windshield.
His face, the look ... if you could have seen the look.
I couldn’t help but tear up as he waved me through. The pride I feel to call myself an American multiplied tenfold as I drove through the gate.
My windshield displays the sticker “Honoring Our Families of the Fallen.”
The grace, compassion and empathy shown on his face from this 30-second glance at the sticker and then to me was one I will never forget.
With all our societal ails and woes, it bodes well that our Army is training these young soldiers to appreciate the sacrifices of those who have gone before them.
