Texas Alliance for Life director takes exception to attack on Shine

To the Editor:

In the race for Texas House District 55, we find it regrettable that State Rep. Hugh Shine’s opponent has chosen to attack Rep. Shine on the abortion issue, claiming he is not pro-life. That claim is false.

My organization, Texas Alliance for Life, is among the premier pro-life organizations in the state and has worked to pass pro-life bills in the Capitol for 30 years. We can say with certainty that Hugh Shine is solidly pro-life.

He is a pro-life champion. He earned 100 percent on our Legislative Scorecard, and our PAC is proud to endorse him for re-election.

Shine voted to defund Planned Parenthood and to double funding for the state’s Alternatives to Abortion program. He voted for all 10 pro-life bills passed by the Legislature in 2017, including a ban on grisly partial-birth abortions and the sale of body parts after abortion. He has supported increasing protections for patients at the end of life against euthanasia.

Hugh Shine supports the current law, passed in 2013, that bans abortions after 20 weeks on unborn babies, including babies with disabilities like Down syndrome, spina bifida, and cleft palate. His opponent’s claims to the contrary are entirely untrue.
