To the Editor:

It’s perversely ironic for rancher Cliven Bundy to excoriate poor people for collecting government subsidies, while ripping off the federal government of a million dollars in grazing fees. But, even if he were to pay up, Bundy and his fellow ranchers, would still be living on government welfare.

Livestock grazing is subsidized by federal agencies on 270 million acres of public land in 11 western states to the tune of nearly $300 million annually. Monthly grazing fees per cow and calf on private rangeland average $11.90, but corresponding fees on federal lands are set at a paltry $1.35.

Even so, grazing subsidies are dwarfed by other government subsidies and the medical, environmental, and other external costs imposed on society by animal agriculture. These extra costs have been estimated at $414 billion annually, or $3,600 per household.

Each of us can make our $3,600 annual contribution to the common good by replacing animal products in our diet with the rich variety of grain, nut, and soy-based meat and dairy alternatives in our neighborhood supermarket.

    Thanks, Mr. Tinker!

You have convinced me that the government needs to stop subsidizing every Tom, Dick and Harry and concentrate on getting back to the business of keeping our country safe from its real enemies.

I would write more but, the BBQ is ready. Nothing like a slow cooked brisket sandwich! Mmm Mmm Mmm

The following is a personal opinion of this writer.

I don't know how people can justify socialism, in any form. Now if you say that Social Security is a form of Socialism, may I remind you that the Social Security program is one that the individual works and earns money for years to assure that when he retires, the funds that has worked for will be available to secure his retirement. But the Federal Government has seen fit to 'borrow' these funds from the general fund and has not paid back the Social Security. Now it is funded, through Congress, utilizing the general fund.

To the writer of the article 'With livestock grazing subsidized, Bundy has no room to criticize poor'. First, he 'didn't rip-off the federal Government', when he found that the BLM was using funds collected from the ranchers instead of making improvements, the BLM was using funds to buy the ranch's from the owners. (2) you state, ' But, even if he were to pay up, Bundy and his fellow ranchers, would still be living on government welfare.' There aren't any ranches left. As I understand it, he is the sole remaining rancher.

As to the charge 'Ripping off the Federal Government, when Bundy found out where and what the BLM was utilizing the money for, he approached the County offices and tried to 'Pay' the appropriate sum to the County, but his offer was rejected. I personally can see a word defining this action – 'Collusion'. The County did not want to have any dealings with Mr. Bundy that might in any way 'interfere' with the BLM Government offices. Then there is the matter of a Mr. Reid's Son running interference for a Chinese organization with the intent to purchase land to develop a Solar generation station.

First it was 'to protect the Tortoise. Well that fell through as it was determined that they are actually killing Tortoise – population control you know. Now as to your charge that 'Monthly grazing fees per cow and calf on private range land average $11.90, but corresponding fees on federal lands are set at a paltry $1.35.' The phrase – 'Paltry $1.35. Have you ever seen the land in Nevada???? It would take numerous acres, and I am not in a position to offer a number on the acreage, but it sure wouldn't be my cup of tea. And the sum you quote for private range land would tell me that me that 'the grass is greener on the privately held properties.

You tend to 'excoriate' the animal culture while defending 'others' in our diet with the rich variety of grain, nut, and soy-based meat and dairy alternatives in our neighborhood supermarket. Don't you realize they, in turn, are subsidized as well.

As I've been able to determine that the BLM was formed on July 16, 1946. The objective of the BLM was to foster betterment of range projects – 50%, to the Treasury – 37.5%, and return to the State – 12.5%. Apparently this was not the case.

    End of personal opinion.

Ah, the monthly back-door "vegan" letter. All wrapped up in a bunch of nonsense about "government welfare" right here in teh middle of cattle country.

    Please.

Take your little parade somewhere else. Humans are OMNIVOROUS- we eat everything and we need to continue to do so in order to be healthy humans.

If you want to improve this country, add meat to your diet so you won't end up in the hospital at taxpayer's expense as I know that most hipsters don't have health insurance. You prefer to sit around being the parasites you are, pontificating about things you don't know about from a position of self-appointed smuggery. Go have a burger and improve the country.
