One bad game.
Actually, Jameill Showers had a bad scrimmage.
The former Shoemaker quarterback, who missed his senior season with a broken collarbone and hasnt started a real game since Nov. 15, 2008, will wait in the wings at least one more game because of a poor performance in Saturdays scrimmage in College Station.
According to the Texas A&M website, Aggies head football coach Kevin Sumlin announced Wednesday that redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel will be A&Ms starting quarterback for the season opener against Louisiana Tech on Aug. 30 in Shreveport, La.
Hes pretty disappointed, said Showers father, James Showers, whos also the head football coach at Aldine Davis High School. When you work the way you work, and put all you have into it, and have been waiting to get a shot to get back on the field, he was pretty disappointed in the decision.
But football teaches you to bounce back and thats what hes done, the former Shoemaker coordinator added. Hes not holding grudges against anybody. Hes looking at it as Theres something Ive got to do to get on the field as a starter, and thats what Im going to do,
Jameill Showers, a redshirt sophomore, was considered the front-runner to be the Aggies starting quarterback as they enter the Southeastern Conference this season following a solid spring after spending last season as Ryan Tannehills backup.
But, in A&Ms first fall scrimmage on Saturday, Showers completed 16 of 24 attempts for only 80 yards and was sacked five times. Manziel, meanwhile, completed 18 of 22 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns.
Johnny has performed the best at this stage and we will proceed until the season opener with him getting the first-team reps, Sumlin said. My policy is simple really; the best player plays. Competition is a great thing and we need more competition at all of our positions. All of our quarterbacks have competed well, and I expect them to continue to push Johnny.
Manziel, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound Parade All-American from Kerrville-Tivy, was named the National High School Coach Association Football Player of the Year in 2010 after throwing for 3,609 yards with 45 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He also ran for 1,674 yards and 30 touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass and returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
But, the highly-touted quarterback was outplayed by Showers in the Aggies Maroon-White spring game.
Showers completed 20 of 31 passes for 203 yards, including touchdown passes of 50 and 63 yards while Manziel was 13-of-27 for 154 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Making matters more difficult, Manziel was arrested in late-June and charged with disorderly conduct, failure to identify and possessing a false identification card, all misdemeanors.
In addition to Manziel and Showers, redshirt sophomore Matt Joeckel and true freshman Matt Davis were also being considered in the Aggies search to replace Tannehill, who was taken by Miami with the eighth overall draft pick in Aprils NFL Draft.
