Keith Combs, the son of Nolanville resident Margaret Combs, led wire-to-wire and won the Bassmaster Elite Series’ Falcon Slam on Monday at Falcon Lake in Zapata.

In the four-day tournament, which had to be delayed a day because of unsafe weather conditions on Sunday, Combs caught 20 fish totaling 111 pounds, 5 ounces to win his first Series event.

Combs, who’s from Huntington and actually serves as a guide on Falcon Lake, weighed in his final five fish Monday at 28 pounds, 2 ounces and held off Bassmaster legend Rick Clunn.

Clunn, who trailed Combs by just a pound going into the final day after a 34-pound, 16-ounce haul Saturday, finished second (105-6).

Combs collected a prize check of $100,000. He also is automatically qualified in the 2014 Bassmaster Classic tournament and earned 100 points toward the 2013 Bassmaster Angler of the Year award, which rewards its winner with $100,000 at the end of the season.
