Belton wins 12-5A girls golf title

Going into the final round Lauren Sanders was still a bit nervous. It didn’t matter that her Belton Lady Tigers had a 20-stroke lead.

Her worries were for naught.

Belton won the tournament by 32 strokes over A&M Consolidated on Thursday at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco and advanced to the Region II-5A tournament. Belton (354-356 — 710) won the team title while Consol (374-368 — 742) took second. Harker Heights (803) was third, followed by Temple (849), Copperas Cove (862), Ellison (877), Consol B (886) and Belton B (904).

Kimberlie Sniggs rebounded from her 98 on the first day of the tournament to shoot an 82 on Thursday.The Region II tournament will be held April 17-18 at Cottonwood.

Playing on their hometown course, Carmen Gonzales and Byler Lindeman have the host Badgers sitting pretty in first place after the first day of the the District 25-3A golf tournament Monday.Gonzales, a three-time state qualifier, shot a first-round 79 to lead teammate Morgan Rogers by three strokes as the Lady Badgers took the top three spots overall and lead Salado in the team standings 332-356.

Lindeman, in third place overall after a first-round 73, is two shots behind freshman teammate Blake Graham, who’s 71 is tied for first with Georgetown East View’s Landon Carpenter. The Badgers lead Salado 295-316 entering the final day on Monday.

The Eagles were led by Dane Hankamer’s 75, followed by a 77 from sophomore Kase Spears.On the girls side, Salado is led by Sarah Colley’s 87 and Meredith Ward’s 89. Leah Ray and Bethany Cheatham both shot a 90 for the Lady Eagles.
