The Lady Grey Wolves were behind before the tip-off of their opening game of the Dripping Springs girls basketball tournament on Thursday but still managed to split their two games a 45-43 loss to San Antonio Warren followed by a 65-63 win over Liberty Hill.
Arriving to the gym with just a minute and half left in the pre-game warm-up, Shoemaker (3-2) was lucky the team got dressed on the bus en route. The Lady Grey Wolves were outscored 21-12 by San Antonio Warren but rallied in the second half. Shoemaker outscored Warren 30-24 the final two quarters, but an ankle injury to Teara Roberson and Kiara Rawls' constant foul trouble became too much for the Lady Grey Wolves to overcome. Cion Hicks led Shoemaker with 13 points in the loss and Roberson finished with 11 before the injury that Lady Grey Wolves' coach Shauna Showers said would sideline the sophomore for two weeks. Rawls scored just two points in 2 1/2 quarters because she was whistled for three first-quarter fouls and fouled out in the second half.
The sophomore point guard, though, scored 30 points in the Lady Grey Wolves' win over Liberty Hill. Hicks scored 12 and Nerissa Logan scored 14.
Shoemaker led 37-28 at halftime but had to rally in the fourth quarter after the Lady Panthers outscored Shoemaker 26-11 in the third quarter, mainly behind the 3-point arc. Liberty Hill hit six 3-pointers to Shoemaker's one in the game.
Shoemaker finishes its pool with El Paso Riverside today at 10:30 a.m. and opens bracket play at either 2 p.m. or 4 p.m.
