Crusaders stun Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE — James Allen hit a jumper with four seconds left to lift the Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team to a 70-68 win over Hardin-Simmons on Thursday.

The win allowed the Crusaders to close their six-game road streak undefeated and improves them to 18-3 on the season and 14-1 in American Southwest Conference action.

Hardin-Simmons falls to 13-7 overall and 10-4 in conference play with the loss.

The first half proved an offensive struggle with several lead changes, before the Cru utilized a 9-0 run late in the half to gain a 36-30 halftime lead.

UMHB led by as many as nine in the second half, before the Cowboys rallied to even the score with just over five minutes left to play.

Allen was one of four athletes putting in double-digits for the Cru.

Kitrick Bell and Cory Meals each scored 14, Allen added 13 and Thomas Orr put up 12. Bell also led the Cru with nine rebounds.

UMHB forced 12 turnovers and recorded seven steals in the game. The Cru shot 46.7 percent in the contest and 80 percent from the free-throw line.

Andy Spears led four Cowboys with double-digits, putting up 13. Lauren Thomas, John Derr and Charles Sams all added 12. Spears and Derr brought down a team-high nine rebounds each.

The Cowboys out-rebounded the Cru 42-37 and forced 10 turnovers.

Hardin-Simmons shot 35.4 percent in the game and 64.7 percent from the free-throw line.

The Cru return to host Schreiner on Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mayborn Campus Center for Cheer the Beard night.

Hardin-Simmons women 67, UMHB 56 — At Abilene, the Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team completed its six-game road streak Thursday night in Abilene, falling to the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls 67-56. The loss drops UMHB to 5-15 overall and 4-11 in American Southwest Conference action. The Cowgirls improved to 12-8 on the season and 10-4 in conference play.

The Cowgirls opened the game with a 5-0 run, gaining an early lead on the Cru. UMHB fought back, leading the Cowgirls 17-16 before Hardin-Simmons used a pair of 3s to regain the lead, and ended the half with a 28-23 lead. Hardin-Simmons opened the second half with a 7-0 run, sustaining that lead throughout the second half and securing the win.

Taylor Tucker led the Cru with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Kourtney Bevers added eight points, Jovana Miles brought down 12 boards and Samara Williams recorded five steals for the Cru. UMHB out-rebounded the Cowgirls 48-33 in the game, forced 17 turnovers and recorded four blocked shots. The Cru shot 30 percent for the game and 76 percent from the free-throw line.

Alexis Popelar led three athletes in double-digits for the Cowgirls with 21 points. Jaclyn von der Heide added 19 points and Joanna Daniel added 15. The Cowgirls forced 19 turnovers and recorded 15 assists in the contest. Hardin-Simmons shot 42.6 percent from beyond the arc and 86.4 percent from the free-throw line.

The Cru host Schreiner on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the Mayborn Campus Center.

UMHB’s Pink Zone game will be played Saturday, February 9th against Texas Lutheran at 1 p.m.
