Lady Leopards clinch title

VERNON — The Temple College Lady Leopards clinched another Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference title Friday with a 9-4, 9-4, sweep over Vernon.

“It’s nice but it’s not what our ultimate goal is,” coach Kristen Zaleski said. “It is one of those things we can check off on our way, but it’s not our main goal. And we don’t want to let up.”

With four games remaining Temple (37-9, 23-5) holds a four game lead over North Central Texas. Temple holds the tiebreaker if the teams finished tied.

Temple pounded out 29 total hits in the sweep against Vernon (30-16, 17-11) on Friday, with Savannah Parker grabbing two doubles and a triple on the day.

Temple never trailed in the opener, but got down 4-0 in the second inning of Game 2, only to answer quickly, tie the game and take the lead two innings later.

“They stayed composed,” Zaleski said. “They were able to stay relaxed and come back.”

Temple, which has won 13 conference titles in 20 years, hosts McLennan on Wednesday and will end conference play next Saturday at Hill.
