COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Howard Payne hits buzzer-beater to edge UMHB men

BROWNWOOD — Timothy Aguero scopped up a loose ball and hit an off-balance jumper at the final buzzer to lift Howard Payne to a 76-74 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday in the regular-season finale.

It was the second time in a month the Crusaders (17-8, 10-7 American Southwest Conference) lost on a last-second shot. Sul Ross State made a 3-pointer at the horn to beat UMHB four weeks ago in Belton.

The Crusaders led by as many as 10 points in the second half, before the Yellow Jackets (11-14, 7-10) surged to go ahead 74-69 with 1:20 remaining. Demarius Cress answered with five straight points for UMHB to it with 28 seconds left.

Howard Payne held the ball for the final shot, but Khyce Randall’s 3-pointer was off the mark with 4 seconds to go before Aguero corralled the ball and hit the game-winner.

Brian Long scored 15 points, Cress and LaKendric Hyson added 13 apiece and Aubrie King chipped in 12 for UMHB, which will be the West Division’s No. 2 seed for the conference tournament in Alpine. The Crusaders face East Texas Baptist at noon Thursday in the quarterfinal round.

Randall finished with 36 points, and Darren Farmer added 13 for Howard Payne.
