HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Belton dominates Ellison
KILLEEN — The Belton Lady Tigers got a step closer to the District 8-6A title with a 13-0 run-rule victory over Killeen Ellison on Tuesday night.
Madison Cotton and Taylor Tubbs combined for a no-hitter, and the Lady Tigers (23-5, 12-1) dished out 16 hits, including a home run from Mackenzie Bartlett. Madison Sniggs was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs.
The Lady Tigers end district play at 7 p.m. Friday when they host Copperas Cove.
Belton is tied with Hewitt Midway in first place in district and if the two finish tied they will play for playoff seeding at 11 a.m. Saturday at Waco ISD.
COLLEGE GOLF: UMHB out front at ASC tourney
KERRVILLE — Mary Hardin-Baylor blistered the course Tuesday to begin the American Southwest Conference tournament, posting rounds of 12-under 276 and 283 to build a lead heading into the final 18 holes.
The Crusaders, whose 276 was the second-lowest round in program history, led Texas-Tyler (292-279) by a dozen strokes heading into today’s final round of the eight-team event at Comanche Trace Golf Club.
UMHB’s Mats Heien set a school record with an 8-under 64 in the first round and followed it with a 69, giving him an eight-shot lead over teammate Alden Fortner (72-69) and UT-Tyler’s George Toone (74-67) atop the individual standings.
Kyle Revis (75-71), Jarrod Brown (72-74) and Mason Wyatt (68-80) completed the Crusaders’ card.
The winning team earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament.
