HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Rockdale’s Locklin headlines area group on APSE 3A all-state team

Rockdale quarterback Torry Locklin was named to the second-team offense to top a group of area players named to the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Class 3A All-State Team, which was released Monday.

Locklin, a senior, threw for 1,599 yards and 20 touchdowns in the regular season to go with 1,239 yards rushing and 16 TDs for Rockdale (12-3), which faces Brock (13-2) in the 3A Division I state championship game at 3 p.m. Thursday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Rockdale linebacker Dylan David received honorable mention, as did Cameron Yoe quarterback Zack Andress and receiver Iverson Westbrook, who helped the Yoemen reach the first round of the playoffs before being eliminated by Teague.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: UMHB women crush Schreiner

BELTON — Kendall Rollins scored a game-high 19 points, and Alicia Blackwell had a double-double to lead Mary Hardin-Baylor to its fifth straight win with an 85-58 victory over Schreiner on Monday.

Blackwell had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Crusaders (9-2), who shot 44 percent from the floor and owned a 58-31 advantage on the boards. Meghan Turner added 12 points, and Aubrie Elliott chipped in 10 off the bench for UMHB, which faces Southwestern at 3 p.m. today in Georgetown.

Alina Hilliard had a team-high 15 points for the Mountaineers (2-5).

CROSS COUNTRY: UMHB adds varsity sports

BELTON — Mary Hardin-Baylor on Monday announced that it will add cross country as men’s and women’s varsity sports for the fall of 2018. The school had fielded men’s and women’s cross country teams before dropping the sport after the fall of 2001.

Alex Aldaco will serve as the head coach of both programs. Aldaco comes to UMHB after a 14-year stint as the cross country coach at Concordia Texas in Austin, where he also coached the track and field teams.

UMHB, which will compete in the American Southwest Conference, will release schedules for both teams in the upcoming spring or summer.
