COLLEGE BASEBALL: Blinn sweeps Temple College
BRENHAM — The Temple College Leopards struggled to keep leads Friday, losing both ends of a doubleheader to Blinn College, 8-1 and 4-3.
In the opener, Temple got on the board first with a run in the top of the third, but Blinn tied it in the bottom of the inning and added three more in the fourth.
After trailing 2-1 in the second game, Temple took the lead on a two-run home run by Jordan Monacy in the sixth. But again Blinn tied it in the bottom half of the inning, and won it with a walk-off single in the seventh.
“We just didn’t get the pitch when we needed it or the big hit when we needed it,” Temple coach Craig McMurtry said.
Starter Jacob Little (1-1) suffered the loss in the opener and reliever Jesse Reed (0-2) got the loss in Game 2.
Temple also got a home run from Grayson Lee in the second game.
“There were some positives,” McMurtry said. “The two home runs, and (Game 2 starter Jacob Hart) did a nice job for us pitching, as did Kernie Baker. We just have be able to close games when we get the lead.”
The Leopards (5-5) will play at Concordia Texas JV on Monday.
COLLEGE BASEBALL: Schreiner tops UMHB in pitchers’ duel
BELTON — Schreiner pitcher Kolby Kitchens allowed five hits and worked into the ninth inning Friday in the Mountaineers’ 1-0 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor at Red Murff Field in the rubber match of the three-game non-conference series.
Schreiner (4-7) and UMHB (1-3) split Thursday’s doubleheader.
Sam Pistrui’s RBI single off reliever Andrew Hutchings (0-1) in the top of the seventh inning stood as the difference.
UMHB — which left nine runners on base — had the tying run reach third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Payton Stanford came in to get the final out for his fourth save of the season.
Evan Samoff started on the mound for the Crusaders and struck out five in six innings.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL: UMHB falls to LeTourneau in extras
BELTON — Mary Hardin-Baylor scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings but couldn’t hold off LeTourneau in a 14-12 loss in 10 innings Friday.
UMHB (5-2, 2-1 American Southwest Conference), which swept Thursday’s doubleheader, got home runs from Dusti Douglas and Kourtney Cummings as part of its 16 hits but it wasn’t enough.
LeTourneau (2-3, 1-2) scored four runs in the top of the 10th off reliever CeCe Darilek (1-1), who allowed six runs — only three earned — on 10 hits and five walks in 7 2/3 innings.
