HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Temple splits on final day of tournament

JUSTIN — Temple finished out its run at the Justin Northwest tournament with a 2-1 loss to Frisco Wakeland and a 4-2 victory over Denton on Saturday.

The Wildcats (5-5) couldn’t muster enough offense in support of sophomore starting pitcher Brandon Goynes, who allowed one earned run in the day’s opener.

Emilio Gonzales struck out three in four innings against Denton to earn the win. Goynes and Jonathan Flores each had two hits in the tournament finale, while T.J. Rumfield and Jared Wiley had one RBI apiece.

Temple is back on the diamond Thursday at the Richardson ISD tournament.

BELTON — The Belton Lady Tigers defeated Brenham 3-2 on Saturday to complete a 5-0 weekend at their host tournament at Lady Tiger Field.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: TC wins both in doubleheader against St. Edwards JV

Temple College swept Saturday’s doubleheader against St. Edwards JV, winning the opening game 9-3 then following up that with a 5-1 victory in Game 2 at Danny Scott Sports Complex.

TC (11-6) recorded five extra-base hits in the first game. Preston Macik hit his second home run of the season and Ty Condel delivered a triple. Jared Hart got the start on the mound, but Kernie Baker got the win with three innings of relief before Nick Mendivil closed it out in the seventh inning.

The Leopards scored four runs in the first inning and another in the third in Game 2. Joey Orsak hit his second double of the day and Seth Spinn hit a triple to power the TC offense. Reece Easterling earned the win as the Leopards used five pitchers in the nightcap.

“It’s good to try to get as many guys time out there,” Temple coach Craig McMurtry said. “We swung the bats well and that enabled us to get a lot of guys time on the mound.”

TC hosts Galveston College in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Monday.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: UMHB falls on road versus Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. — Belhaven padded a two-run lead with a four-run sixth and a three-run seventh to down Mary Hardin-Baylor 11-2 on Saturday.

The Crusaders (4-6, 2-1 American Southwest Conference), who swept Friday’s doubleheader to open the weekend series, twice cut their deficit in half — 2-1 and 4-2 — before Belhaven (3-10, 1-5) broke it open late in the contest.

Dakota Best, who had six hits over Friday’s two games, delivered two of UMHB’s five Saturday. Best and Max Conway drove in the UMHB runs. Crusaders starter Andrew Hutchings allowed four runs and struck out four in 4 2/3 innings, falling to 0-2 this season.

UMHB returns to Belton for a non-conference tilt at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Southwestern University. The Crusaders remain at Red Murff Field for a three-game ASC set versus Louisiana College that starts Friday.
