HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS: Rockdale duo gets shot at state title

COLLEGE STATION — Rockdale’s Devon Whitsel and Reyna Gonzalez survived two matches Thursday to earn a shot at the Class 3A mixed doubles title at the UIL Tennis State Championships.

Whitsel and Gonzalez cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 quarterfinal win over Kenzie Bonam and Austin Fairchild of Ingram Moore before gutting out a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 semifinal victory over Alexis Busby and Dacotah Killian of Lone Oak.

The Rockdale tandem plays for the title at noon today.

In 3A girls singles, Cameron Yoe’s Houston Harris was eliminated with a 6-0, 6-1 quarterfinal loss to defending champion Sara Humpal of Corpus Christi London.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: UMHB’s Johnston named TABC assistant of the year

BELTON — Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Zane Johnston was named Small College Assistant Coach of the Year by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and received his award Thursday night at a banquet in San Antonio.

Johnston recently finished his sixth season with the Crusaders, who have a 104-59 record and played in the 2013 NCAA Division III national championship game during his time as an assistant.

Johnston was a four-year letterman at UMHB during his playing days, when he was a three-time All-American Southwest Conference selection and part of two conference championship teams.
