Copperas Cove Notebook: Lady Dawgs to face Waco for playoff spot

COPPERAS COVE The Copperas Cove Lady Dawg basketball team knows what it has to do to officially join the rest of the competitors in the 5A Texas state basketball playoffs defeat Waco in a play-in game.

The two teams, which will each drop down to District 16-4A next season, finished the regular season with identical 8-6 marks in District 13-5A with each team winning on its home court. They will meet for a third-and-final time at 7 p.m. on Friday at the neutral site of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

The winner of the game will then play the Klein Bearkats in the bi-district round of the playoffs on Tuesday night. If Copperas Cove defeats Waco the game against Klein will be held in Bryan with tip-off time to be determined later.

Boys soccer proving to be a force to be reckoned with

The Bulldawg soccer team sent out a notice to fellow district members that this year's edition of the scrappy bunch from Cove will not be pushed around any longer.

After a convincing victory 2-0 victory over the Temple Wildcats on Feb. 3, Cove turned around and defeated the Harker Heights Knights 4-1 on Tuesday evening.

The Bulldawgs will hope to confirm their legitimacy Friday night when they travel to Waco to face the upstart Lions in another district tilt.

Swimming team prepares for regionals

Several Aquadawgs are preparing for their most important meet of the season Friday and Saturday in San Antonio the regional meet.

B.J. Wardlow will headline a team of Bulldawgs as he enters the meet as the District 13-5A winner in the 200-yard freestyle event. He will also compete in the 50-yard freestyle event after finishing third at the district meet.

Kathy Connor will represent the girls individual competitors in the 50-yard freestyle as well as competing in the relay events.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jaime Tamez, freshman , soccer. Tamez scored his eighth goal of the season and assisted on the other goal in the Bulldawgs 2-0 upset victory over the Temple Wildcats Friday night.

STATISTIC OF THE WEEK: 3, The number of seasons that the Lady Dawg basketball team have eclipsed the 20-win barrier under head coach Kevin Baker. They improved their record to 23-11 Tuesday night against Belton.
