Copperas Cove Notebook: Soccer boys off to fast start on pitch

LAMPASAS With the start of the regular season right around the corner, the Copperas Cove boys soccer team got in some good work over the weekend, going 2-1 at the Lampasas scrimmage tournament.

After falling to Brownwood 2-0 in its tourney opener both of the Lions' goals coming in the second half off Bulldawg miscues Cove rebounded to blank the Badgers 2-0 and finished the day with a 4-1 win over Marble Falls.

Senior striker Travis Rowland scored off an assist from David Martinez, and Joel Hanley added another goal off an assist from Lowell Morgan in the second half to upend Lampasas. Dustin Mast was the winning goalie in the shutout.

Rowland and Aaron Velasco, off an assist from Pierre LaFaille, gave the Dawgs a 2-0 lead going into the break against Marble Falls. In the second half, Cove continued to shine offensively with goals coming from Hanley and Vitalie Neculseanu. Marble Falls managed to score a goal in the final five seconds to make the final tally 4-1.

The scrimmage was to help prepare the team for its regular season opener on the road Thursday at Bastrop. Cove will play through Saturday at the tournament.

Athlete of the Week Bekah Long, senior post, had a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) in the Lady Dawgs' 57-43 win over Waco on Friday.

Statistic of the Week 3, consecutive 3-pointers by guard Lauren Flood, who was perfect from the field in the first quarter in Cove's win over Waco.
