ROUND ROCK – Ellison's unbeaten season came to an abrupt halt Thursday night in Round Rock, as the Dragons capitalized on nine Eagle turnovers in a 51-14 romp.
All but one Round Rock scoring drive came after Ellison turned the ball over, and three turnovers inside the Dragons' 20-yard line thwarted Eagle scoring chances.
The game was originally scheduled for Leo Buckley Stadium on Friday, but was moved to Dragon Stadium one night early to avoid stormy weather from Hurricane Ike.
The turnover bug bit Ellison early, as on the opening kickoff Daniel Cobb lost the handle and the Dragons pounced on a loose ball on the Eagle 26. Quarterback Alex Silva threw the first of four touchdown tosses when he hit Josh Elander on a 16-yard slant pattern for the score.
Two plays later Ellison lost the ball again, as Kyle Skinner's pass deflected off Cameron Crowder and into the hands of Marc DeLeon and the Dragons defense. Three plays later Silva sneaked across for a 1-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Ellison then marched the length of the field, with Skinner converting two third downs with a 40-yard pass to a streaking Larry Brooks and a 10-yard pass to Crowder in the right flat. But on
third-and-eight from the Round Rock 9, J.C. Munoz stepped in front of
Skinner's pass and returned the ball to the Round Rock 20. Jordan Wells
ran down the right sideline on the next play for a 21-0 Dragons lead with
time remaining in the first quarter.
Another Ellison fumble led to a Round Rock field goal before the Eagles
got on the board. After an apparent 59-yard Jaron Turner touchdown run was
negated by a holding penalty, Skinner connected with Marcus DeGrazia on a
52-yard touchdown toss, with the senior taking a pass in the flat down the
right sideline to put the Eagles on the board with 4:29 left before
halftime. Round Rock scored twice more before intermission, as Wells'
60-yard kickoff return set up a 25-yard Silva to Elander touchdown pass
and another Ellison fumble at their own 29 led to a Silva to Blake Knight
scoring toss for a 38-7 halftime lead.
Turnovers continued to plague Ellison (2-1) in the second half, as a
forced punt at midfield was fumbled back to the Dragons at the Eagles 14,
setting up Silva's fourth touchdown pass from 11 yards out to Andre
Taylor. Ellison's ensuing posession reched the Round Rock 5, but DeLeon
fell on another fumble to keep the Eagles from scoring. The Dragons scored
one last time on Wells' 32-yard run in the early fourth quarter, but
Darius Williams did block the extra point try. Ellison scored the game's
last points, as Crowder's 44-yard kickoff return to the Dragon 44 led to
David Cobb's 9-yard run and Jeff Myszka's second extra point kick. Brooks,
Daniel Cobb and Chris Donaldson led the Eagles defense with six tackles
apiece, and Lynn Grady notched a seven-yard sack of Silva in the second
