Former Killeen High offensive lineman Rhontae Scales has been charged with assault causing bodily injury after an early morning fight in College Station over the weekend.

According to Lt. Rodney Sigler, College Station Police Department public information officer, Scales, a 6-foot-6, 318 pound true freshman at Texas A&M, was reportedly among of group of four or five men involved in the beating of a Bryan man Sunday morning at 2:30 a.m. in a university parking garage.

Scales was the only man arrested. The other men involved fled the scene, Sigler added.

Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman said in his Monday news conference that he had spoken with Scales and added that he was investigating the incident.

"I don't know everything about that situation. I have talked to him and I've continued to discuss things with him," Sherman said in the news conference, according to the Texas A&M athletics Web site "College kids, out at night after a ball game, and not making the best decisions sometimes. I'm still investigating that and getting all my facts together. But that will be something I'll take care of."

The arresting officer was involved in a traffic stop when he heard what sounded like the makings of a fight at the parking garage located in the Northgate area. The officer saw one person – who he and the victim identified as Scales – in the group hit the victim twice, Sigler said.

The victim complained of pain in his forearm and thought it might have been broken and had scratches on his back and swelling in his face.

Scales was charged and released after posting $4,000 bond later Sunday morning.

"I know he's a good person," said Killeen High coach Sam Jones. "He was a great kid and never got into any fights. Evidently something happened but I can't speculate on what."
