Lindys, Athlon Sports, Phil Steele, were all wrong about Brandon Joiner. Lindys and Athlon labelled the Arkansas State senior defensive end a second-team All-Sun Belt Conference preseason selection; Phil Steele had him as a third-teamer.
The former Shoemaker defensive end proved not everything you read is true.Joiner was voted the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of Year on Wednesday after posting a conference-leading 12 sacks this season and leading the Red Wolves to the GoDaddy.com Bowl, Jan. 8 against Mid-American Conference champion North Illinois in Mobile, Ala. Joiner, a second-team all-conference player last season, recorded at least a partial sack in 10 of 12 games this season for ASU and had four against Louisiana-Lafayette, tying the most in ASU and SBC history.
For the second straight season, former Copperas Cove receiver Brelan Chancellor was an All-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention at North Texas. Chancellor averaged 135.7 total yards per game to lead the Mean Green. He averaged 21.9 yards per kickoff return and led North Texas receivers with 37 receptions for 457 yards and three touchdowns.
Chancellors former high school teammates Josh Boyce and Logan Brock also received all-conference honors at TCU. Boyce, a sophomore receiver, led the Horned Frogs with 56 receptions for 932 yards and nine touchdowns and earned an All-Mountain West Conference first-team selection. Brock, a senior tight end, was an all-MWC honorable mention.
The 15th-ranked Horned Frogs play Louisiana Tech in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 21.
In Conference USA, former Harker Heights quarterback Ryan Balentine was an all-conference honorable mention wide receiver for Southern Mississippi.
Balentine led the Golden Eagles with 742 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. The senior receiver caught three balls for 24 yards and a touchdown in Southern Miss. 49-28 upset win over then No. 6-ranked Houston in for the Conference USA championship last Saturday. The Golden Eagles play Nevada in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24.
Joiners 12 sacks this season rank fourth nationally and second all-time in Arkansas State and Sun Belt Conference history. He averaged 1.29 tackles for a loss a game, second in the conference, and led the conferences best total and scoring defense.
Joiners former Shoemaker teammate, Eric Braswell was a Conference USA All-Freshman team selection in his first season at Houston.
