How will all the recent rain effect area fishing conditions?

Also, what will more rain — expected to be heavy this weekend — do to area lakes?

“It’s really hard to say,” said Killeen’s David Stidham, outdoors expert and tournament angler. “On the one hand, it will hopefully keep the lakes full through the winter. That’s the good side of things. On the other hand, area lakes are up so much already so it may make the lakes unusable and shut the lakes down.”

Stidham won four Tuesday Night Tournaments this season and was part of the championship squad which won the TNT Tournament of Champions, splitting a first-place prize of $4,000.

Stidham said predicting how fishing will be in November is a total crapshoot.

“It’s so hard to say right now,” Stidham said. “Of course it will probably be cold, which keeps the water temperature down — which makes the fish more active. But it’s too hard to predict the future because we’ll have to see what’s what with the rain this weekend.

“And I think both of our area lakes, Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir, should perform about equally. They both have big fish in them and both have a lot of fish.”

Stidham recommends using crankbaits and Texas rigs.

“Lately, we’ve been catching a lot of fish using both crankbaits and Texas rigs,” he said. “The fish are starting to feed on shad for the winter and crankbaits resemble a shad.”
